This must be the year of the Franco. Between receiving graduate degrees at some of the best schools in the country and an ongoing gig on General Hospital playing a performance artist named Franco, not to mention an inspired guest starring role on an episode of 30 Rock, this is one of just 5 major releases the actor has coming out in 2010. It’s a courtroom drama about Allen Ginsberg’s obscenity trial, but the film is somewhat experimental and peppered both with animation and Franco’s interview scenes as Ginsberg himself. Both the film, and Franco’s central performance showcasing the full range of Ginsberg, look inspired. James Franco just keeps getting better with each successive film; he’s capable of both intense commitment and looney brilliance. Howl seems to capture all of it.
