Words probably don’t do this trailer justice, and I have a feeling that the trailer can’t do the full documentary justice, either. It’s the story of Mark Hogencamp, an artist who was beaten in a bar brawl to the point of sustaining brain damage. His injuries not only caused him memory loss, but the inability to continue painting. Over time he began using dolls to stage scenes that drew elements from World War II as well as his own life, including aspects of his trauma, merging the two into a dramatically altered fictionalization that apparently made it easier for him to process what had happened to him and begin to emotionally recover from it. This resulting hobby took over his life and his property, becoming not only his therapy but a bizarre, new art form. As word of this odd Being John Malkovich-like, ever-evolving creation got out, drawing the fascination of both the public and the art world, Hogencamp found himself struggling to maintain control of the single thing his sanity had escaped into.
